Welcome to Emmaus Colchester
Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model as it provides meaningful work for companions but also generates the funding that maintains our communities. The main business activity for Emmaus Colchester is collecting donated furniture and household goods and selling them in our shops. Some items are refurbished or, in the case of electrical items, PAT tested for safety. We also offer efficient and professional house clearance service. For more information about our shop opening times or to enquire about our house clearance service, please contact us on 01206 768887 or drop us an email.
At Emmaus Colchester we work to provide homeless people with the opportunity to regain control of their lives by living and working alongside others in a supportive communal environment. We take referrals from agencies and individuals, and each one is considered based on its own circumstances. We do have a small number of criteria that all companions must meet in order to join our community. They are:
- You must be able to volunteer for 40 hours per week in the social enterprise.
- No alcohol, illegal drugs or legal highs are allowed on the Emmaus premises. We undertake regular drug and alcohol testing.
- You must be prepared to participate in community life.
In order to apply to join our community, please visit our website. For enquires about the community living or to arrange a visit to talk to our support staff, please send an email.
Emmaus Colchester runs a café at one of our charity shops – New Life, 45-47 Crouch Street CO3 3EN . Our café opening hours : 9.30am-4pm- Monday to Saturday. Please visit our Facebook page for the latest news about upcoming events and live music afternoons.
Emmaus Colchester is a homelessness charity providing more than just a bed for the night to people who have experienced homelessness and social exclusion. We provide a home for as long as someone needs it and meaningful work in our social enterprise. Living in a stable environment with the opportunity to work helps our companions, as residents are known, to regain lost self-esteem and the confidence to get back on their feet. There are currently 29 Emmaus communities across the UK, providing a home and meaningful work to more than 750 formerly homeless people.
Like any flourishing community, Emmaus Colchester is most successful when everyone makes a contribution. For us, that means working together in the social enterprise, to generate funds needed to support the community and the companions that call it home. Emmaus is not about giving hand-outs, it’s about providing people with the tools to help themselves. This approach has been proven to produce long-term, sustainable results. For the many people who have been stuck in a cycle of homelessness, Emmaus provides the space and support they need to take stock of their lives and make positive changes for the future.
