Mersea History

Welcome To The Mersea Museum…

Established in 1976 and located in the centre of West Mersea, The Mersea Island Museum is a great place to bring the kids to give them a bit more of an insight to the history of Mersea. Renowned for it’s fresh fishing, oystering, boat building and wild fowling means that the Museum is packed full of fantastic things to represent all of this. The main hall which is where the main exhibition features a number of different displays that are changed every year.¬†Computers in the Resource Centre can access over 35,000 images, slideshows, articles, parish records, local census contents, audio files and videos which you can browse freely. Children are welcome, with puzzles, quizzes and other activities available.

The Museum is an independent organisation maintained by Mersea Island Museum Trust and run entirely by volunteers. That’s how we are able to keep the price low.
